Rationale & Purpose

In pursuing its mission of ‘developing globally competent citizens through education’, the University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJP) recognizes the value of extracurricular activities in enriching the outlook of students, their university life and enhancing their development potential to become all-rounders.  Competitions offer opportunities for students to gain experience, and motivate them to challenge themselves, think analytically, adopt new techniques, uncover personal aptitude, perform better, showcase skills, win awards, accept failure as a stepping stone to success and broaden their horizons.

The experiences a student can accumulate through the involvement in competitions will provide them with amazing material to showcase the student’s potential in application forms and then later, during the selection process. Competitions play a key role in motivating students to perform and excel and offer a lot more reward than just the winning prize. Competitions offer a chance for participants to;

  • gain substantial knowledge and experience,
  • showcase skills,
  • enhance critical thinking
  • analyze and evaluate outcomes
  • uncover personal aptitude
  • adopt innovative techniques and
  • develop their rational ideas and skills.

Scope

This policy is applicable to students who take part in competitions and the Instructors /coordinators responsible for organizing student participation in competitions. How about the Lecturers-in-Charge of courses that the students should follow?

Instructors are strongly encouraged to support USJP accepted competitions, as student education happens both within and outside of the traditional classroom.

Considering the efforts, time, co-curricular magnitude, student competition and the range of benefits the participation in such competitions must be properly encouraged and adequately rewarded.

Policy Statement

USJP will encourage and facilitate its students to participate in extra-curricular activities and university approved competitions without neglecting/ disrupting their academic activities.   USJP will record their participation, reward achievements through certification and provide publicity through display, newsletter and website.  A committee (Sports council) comprising academic and administrative members will be appointed to provide necessary coordination and assistance with due regard to health, safety and discipline of students taking part in extracurricular activities and competitions.
